His relentlessness brought the dominance young fans dream of experiencing one day. He took no prisoners; he did what he wanted to do. Most importantly, he never apologized for it. People who missed the glory years might have hated that part of Davis, but you still had to respect it. Davis became a regular at Syracuse's varsity football practices, taking notes on every detail until the head coach discovered him and ordered him removed.
After graduating with a degree in English in , Davis sought a football coaching position at Adelphi College in New York. Told by the head coach that there wasn't an opening, Davis took his case to the school president and emerged with an assistant's job.
He parlayed that into the head-coaching job at Ft. Belvoir, Va. Davis then spent a year as a scout for the Baltimore Colts before returning to college football, as an assistant at The Citadel and then Southern California. In , the Los Angeles Chargers hired him to work under offensive mastermind Sid Gillman as an offensive ends coach. But he is going to be. Hired as head coach and general manager of the three-year-old Oakland Raiders in , he took a team that had finished the previous year to the second-best record in the eight-team AFL at It was the biggest one-year turnaround in pro football history and the Associated Press named him Coach of the Year.
After going in , the Raiders rebounded to the next season. He moved swiftly to force a merger with the established NFL by reaching contract agreements with many of the league's starting quarterbacks.
One of Davis' first big moves came after the following season, when he hired year-old Madden as his head coach. Davis became the organization's czar in after winning a court battle with co-owner Wayne Valley, who had challenged a contract Davis had signed with another co-owner that ceded Davis total authority.
On Dec. He then went into the Army, being assigned as head football coach at Ft. Belvoir, Va. There he molded a national power service team and capped one season by defeating the University of Maryland, National Collegiate Champions, in a squad game.
